What does it mean to Prearrange?
Prearrangement means that you make your funeral and cemetery arrangements yourself, while you are still
alive, rather than leaving these arrangements to be made by your spouse, your children, or someone else
after your death.
Why should a family or individual prearrange?
With prearrangement the family knows of your wishes and the cost has been planned, and paid for. This makes
the loss of a loved one much easier on family and friends. There is no way to make the right decision on the
very worst day of one's life. It will always lead to second-guessing and regret, no matter what decision was
made. We will all face this eventuality sooner or later, so there are two ways to deal with it. One, prepare
in advance, the other is to leave this planning and expensive burden to your loved ones, when it is Always a
matter of necessity, and Never a matter of choice.
What does pre-payment mean?
Pre-payment means paying for your funeral and cemetery expenses yourself, while you are alive, rather than
having someone else or your estate pay for your arrangements after your death.
Why should I pre-pay?
Pre-payment gives individuals greater peace of mind that all aspects of their funeral and cemetery
arrangements, including the financial aspects, have been finalized. It lifts the burden from your loved ones
by relieving decision-making and financial pressure at a time of grief and emotional stress. It also
eliminates the "emotional Over-spending" that often occurs. These expenses must be paid before
final arrangements can be provided, usually within 24-48 hours of death, which can be very burdensome if the
death was unexpected.
What types of pre-payment options exist?
Cemetery expenses may be paid in cash or over a 3 or 5 year period. If the full amount is paid within 2
years, all interest is refunded, so it is the same as paying cash. Funeral expenses are covered by an
Insurance policy written on the individual, with the Mortuary being the beneficiary. This provides full
coverage as soon as first premium payment is received, so if death occurs unexpectedly, the full cost of the
services selected will be covered. Insurance policies are usually written for 8 year funding, with "3
years same as cash", or may be paid in full immediately. If death is accidental, the insurance is
double-indemnity.
Who should I contact regarding pre-payment?
A representative of the funeral home and cemetery whose services you plan to utilize in order to learn the
cost of the services and merchandise that you prefer. This information will allow you to determine the cost
of a plan, customized to meet your needs and wishes, and the payment options that best suit your
circumstances and fit your budget.
How do I know if I am getting a fair price?
The only way to really know whether you are getting a fair price is to do some comparison-shopping. This is
one of the major advantages of prearrangement and pre-payment because you have the opportunity to do
comparison-shopping and are not under any severe time constraints. Ask enough questions that you can be
assured of an "apples to apples" comparison so there are no surprises for your family for out of
pocket expenses that you thought were covered, but were not, and the family will be required to pay at the
time of need. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is !!
What products and services are covered through pre-payment?
Virtually any funeral, cemetery or crematory merchandise or service can be pre-paid. As can be seen in the
pie chart below, there are seven (7) items that are required as part of the final arrangements. All of these
can be prepaid, but the Incidental expenses and the Open and Closing (O/C) are not frozen as are the Funeral
and Cemetery costs.
Here is a convenient Pie Chart that shows what is involved in PreNeed Planning
Is the price of merchandise and services that have been pre-purchased guaranteed against inflation?
Yes, most cemetery and funeral costs are "Frozen" at today's prices, when you make your first
payment. Nationally, Cemetery and Funeral costs increase approximately 8-10% per year, so the cost doubles
about every 10 years. Money placed in your own savings account for this eventuality does not have inflation
protection, nor does the use of an existing life insurance policy that was not issued in conjunction with a
Funeral home care agreement.
Can I change my pre-arrangements once they are pre-paid?
Virtually all funeral homes and cemeteries will allow you to change the specific merchandise or services
that you selected after you have pre-paid for them. However, there may be additional costs involved.
